LEIGH BACH
A collaborative project with Kate Pilot.

Colour and material are defining architectural devices within this compact Northland bach, shaping how the space is experienced. The palette draws from mid-century influences and the retro beach culture that defined New Zealand summers in the 1940s–1960s, when the humble bach became a coastal icon. A neutral base of Cardrona Half and Cardrona Qtr establishes calm, while confident blocks of colour and timber visually zone spaces and create identity. Carefully selected yellows and blues inject personality into everyday rituals, elevating routine tasks.
Colours are warm, optimistic, and unpretentious — designed to evoke joy, nostalgia, and the ease of a holiday by the sea. Rather than accenting objects, colour is integrated into the built fabric, with cabinetry, flooring, wall planes, and tiled surfaces creating moments of contrast, rhythm, and depth. These gestures organise the modest space while celebrating the timeless charm of the classic Kiwi bach.
Kitchen cabinetry is finished in Five Fingers Peninsula, a client favourite and subtle coastal blue. Muted to avoid overwhelming the space, it complements rich timber tones, creating warmth and balance while nodding to mid-century tradition. The laundry is boldly left on display in Carterton yellow. Paired with matching tiles, it transforms a functional space into a confident, joyful feature, reinforcing a philosophy that celebrates utility with delight.
Timber grounds and tempers the white walls and ceilings, while bold linoleum on bathroom walls and floors in yellow and blue introduces playful colour. Both linoleum and terracotta floor tiles were chosen for durability, practicality, visual texture, and tactility, reinforcing mid-century references and coastal character.
Repetition of colour across cabinetry and architectural elements establishes cohesion, creating a continuous visual language that connects rooms. Colour becomes both spatial and emotional — defining zones, enhancing function, and creating an interior that feels joyful, calm, and intimately connected to the client and setting.
